Overcoming the challenge

Overcoming the challenge

Nominations for this category of ITA Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards are projects for which the major civil engineering works* have been completed between 1st January 2018 and 1st April 2020.

This category is dedicated to projects which overcame either foreseen or unforeseen extreme challenges during excavation and construction. In this category, projects are invited to celebrate their achievements in overcoming adversity and to share their lessons learned.

Judges will consider project implementation and features that demonstrate:

  • Safety performance with records demonstrating Lost Time Injury Frequency Rates throughout all project phases
  • Approach to keep costs under control during the progress
  • IDemonstrated overall Project Owner’s satisfaction with completed work, including quality performance

The Unforeseen:

  • Immediate means and methods to control the acute challenge
  • Design and construction methods developed to overcome the challenge, or indications for interruption/suspension of works
  • Overall approach to manage the project (and the contract) through the challenge and until project completion

The Foreseen:

  • Design and construction methods developed to overcome the expected challenges
  • Results of implementation and possible adjustments during progress regarding methods and schedule

Winning projects give support to the industry with their dedication to sharing lessons learned.
