Major Project of the Year

Over EUR 500 Million

This prestigious category recognizes groundbreaking underground projects with a budget exceeding EUR 500 million, highlighting their exceptional execution in terms of safety, technological advancement, and innovative solutions to complex challenges.

Eligible projects must have completed their major civil engineering works* between 1st March 2022 and 1st April 2025.

Evaluation Criteria:

Projects will be assessed based on the following key aspects:

  • Exemplary Safety Performance: Demonstrating a strong commitment to worker safety through comprehensive safety records, including Lost Time Injury Frequency Rates (LTIFR) and other industry benchmarks.
  • Innovative Design and Construction: Showcasing pioneering engineering solutions and technological advancements that push the boundaries of underground construction.
  • Sustainability Integration: Implementing environmentally responsible practices, resource efficiency, and sustainable construction methodologies.
  • Strategic Construction Management: Effective planning, execution, and risk mitigation strategies that ensured timely project completion within the defined schedule.
  • Cost Optimization: Development and implementation of cost-saving measures without compromising quality, safety, or performance.
  • Client Satisfaction: Demonstrated fulfillment of project owner expectations regarding quality, efficiency, and overall project outcomes.
  • Value Addition: The project’s contribution to industry best practices, setting new benchmarks for future tunneling and underground space developments.
  • Public and Community Engagement: Effective communication and outreach strategies to secure public support and mitigate the impact of construction activities on surrounding communities.
  • Unique Project Attributes: Recognition of outstanding features, commercial resolutions, or other special circumstances that distinguish the project as an engineering marvel.

Recognition and Impact:

Winning projects will stand as beacons of excellence in the tunneling industry, inspiring future endeavors and underscoring the invaluable role of underground space in sustainable urban development. This award aims to highlight projects that not only achieve technical brilliance but also promote the broader benefits of underground infrastructure to society and the environment.

*Major civil engineering works include the excavation and permanent structural support of tunnels, caverns, and cut-and-cover structures as applicable to the project.
