Project of the Year
Renovation projects
This category celebrates excellence in the renovation of tunnels and underground structures, recognizing projects that exemplify innovation, technical advancement, and engineering excellence. Eligible projects are evaluated based on their safety performance, complexity, technological progress, and the ability to overcome significant project challenges. Special consideration is given to projects that involve the reuse of abandoned underground structures or renovation works conducted while the tunnel remains in operation.
Eligible projects in this category must pertain to projects where the major civil engineering works*—including underground excavation and renovation—have been substantially completed between March 1, 2022, and April 1, 2025.
Evaluation Criteria:
The judging panel will assess projects based on the following key aspects:
- Exemplary Safety Performance: Measurable records demonstrating Lost Time Injury Frequency Rates (LTIFR) and overall adherence to safety best practices.
- Innovative Design & Construction Methods: Groundbreaking techniques and engineering solutions developed for and implemented during the project.
- Sustainability & Environmental Responsibility: Integration of sustainable practices and environmentally responsible construction methods.
- Cost-Efficiency & Value Engineering: Development of cost-saving solutions while maintaining high-quality outcomes.
- Client & Stakeholder Satisfaction: Evidence of the Project Owner’s satisfaction regarding quality, timeliness, and overall project execution.
- Demonstrated Added Value: Clear contributions to the industry through the successful implementation of best practices and innovations.
- Community Engagement & Public Relations: Effective communication strategies to garner public support and mitigate the impact of construction activities.
- Special Features & Unique Challenges: Projects incorporating exceptional elements such as the adaptive reuse of existing underground infrastructure or renovations executed while maintaining operational continuity.
Recognition & Impact:
Winning projects will serve as benchmarks of excellence in underground renovation, inspiring future developments and fostering greater awareness of the benefits of underground space utilization. Through outstanding execution, these projects will exemplify ingenuity, sustainability, and transformative engineering in the tunnelling industry.
Major civil engineering works include the excavation and permanent structural support of tunnels, caverns, and cut-and-cover structures as applicable to the rehabilitation and renovation projects.
